INDIVIDUALS

Mario llosa believes that Peru has not yet come to that place where the individual can set himself apart from his society. he believes that a nation that gets to that point will conquer all. “the first to break up the masses into individual beings who with time gained the right to think and act for them selves would become thanks to that unknown exercise freedom, the most powerful civilization in the world.” However the author of freedom and democracy argues that this will never be possible even with freedom because humans arent able to shape their identities themselves so they conform. “the modern man is under the illusion that he knows what he wants but he wants what hes supposed to want.”Even though the state or church isnt controling our thoughts our desires our directions society still does. We may have the ability to act on what we want but the root all of our desire is conformity.

  1. I think that you have touched on some very important ideas in this post and I agree with most everything that you have discussed here. However there are still the questions to be raised by the combination of these two thoughts; Is the human mind taught to want conformity or to conform? You have said that the author of Freedom and Democracy wrote, “the modern man is under the illusion that he knows what he wants but he wants what he is supposed to want,” and then you go on to explain that “the root of all our desire is conformity.” Though I do agree with these statements to an extent they do pose the question, does this mean that all man’s wants are, essentially, alike, that every human being on this planet all crave the same thing, conformity? Or are there actually people who strive for the opposite, individuality, freedom? And then are we ever really free? Or are we eternally confined by our desire to conform? One last question, if this “most powerful civilization in the world” were ever created or found, would that desire to conform linger, becoming a hindrance to this nation (kind of like the opposite of “We”)? I hope that these questions are considered helpful in some way.
Sorry just going to slip another question in down here. If the root of desire is conformity than how could the “most powerful civilization in the world” come into being?
